How to Make It

  1. In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle the cherry tomatoes and three of the basil leaves.
  2. Add the alcohol-free whiskey, lemon juice, agave syrup, and ice.
  3. Shake hard until well chilled.
  4. Double strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
  5. Slap the remaining basil leaf between your palms to wake it up, and float it as garnish.

Why This Works

Tomato is technically a fruit, and this drink takes that seriously. Muddled cherry tomatoes contribute sweetness, gentle acidity, and umami — that savory depth is what makes the drink linger. With lemon handling the bright acid and agave the sweetness, the tomato is free to be the drink's mysterious middle.

Basil is the aromatic bridge; it's related to both the garden (tomato) and the glass (citrus). The double strain matters here more than usual — you want the tomato's flavor without its pulp, so the finished drink is clean, not cloudy.

The Alcohol-Free Swap

Alcohol-free whiskey grounds the garden ingredients with warmth and spice — a savory-adjacent drink needs that backbone.
